Housing Support

SHAC delivers temporary supported accommodation and mobile support to families in Cairns who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Support is offered in the form of advocacy, information, education and referral pathways - all of which aim to reduce barriers to housing and increase housing access.

Eligibility:

Families who are eligible for SHAC housing support are:

  • a family group with at least one adult and at least one dependent child under 18 - this could be:

    • single parent with child/ren

    • couple with child/ren

    • multi-generational family group (e.g. grandma, mum and child/ren)

    • other family group (e.g. mum with her own children, and her nieces/nephews too; or grandma caring directly for grandchildren)

    • person who is pregnant

  • Currently live in the Cairns Local Government Area; and

  • Have no known Services working with them that could assist with looking for housing (i.e. not working with another homelessness service or support program.

Unfortunately SHAC does not work with single people or couples with no dependents.
